Removing Silver Fillings for Improved Health?

According to the American Dental Association, “the removal of amalgam restorations from the non-allergic patient for the alleged purpose of removing toxic substances from the body, when such treatment is performed solely at the recommendation of the dentist, it is improper and unethical.”

To sum this up, there is no evidence that amalgam restorations (silver colored fillings) cause disease or the removal of those restorations will prevent any disease. If however you would like your amalgam restorations replaced because you don’t like the way they look, that is perfectly within your rights as a patient. It is ethical for a dentist to do this. There has been much confusion regarding this topic, but there is no scientific proof that amalgam restorations are the problem. Only the unscrupulous professional would suggest that his or her patient have his amalgam fillings replaced for the reason of improved health.
