Over the last few years, there has been quite a bit in the news regarding the controversial use of BPA in product manufacturing, especially in products for babies and children.
BPA (Bisphenol A) is a chemical that’s been used for over forty years in the production of many plastic items such as food containers, baby bottles, and epoxy resins used to coat the inside of metal products.
Why does this matter to us?
Some dental sealants and composites may also contain BPA.
Recently, a study has come out linking tooth fillings made with BPA and behavior issues in children.
The study said that children who had fillings made using BPA are more likely to have behavior and emotional problems a few years later. The effect was found to be small and it was mentioned that the research team was unsure if there were other chemicals possibly released from the fillings as well that could be causing the connection found in the study.
Many people prefer the look of the tooth colored fillings which may contain the traces of BPA. If you are looking for an alternative, silver colored or “amalgam” fillings are made without the use of BPA.
The topic is controversial for sure, just as is the use of BPA in all products.
Scientists are continually studying the use and effects of BPA and have suggested that the public minimize their exposure to BPA while the studies continue.
As always, Dr. Holleron keeps an eye out for further studies on topics such as this in order to provide the best care for our patients.
