Today’s Terrific Toothbrush Tips

When was the last time you visited the toothbrush aisle at the grocery store? The options are endless and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by brands, colors, sizes, textures…etc! Here are a few tips when it comes to choosing and using our favorite bathroom accessory.

Obviously everyone needs to brush their teeth. Brushing teeth regularly helps remove food and plaque from teeth so that bacteria and tartar will not form leading to further problems with teeth and gums. Not to mention, the fresh breath that brushing provides is a nice treat to those around you!

First, you can choose either a manual toothbrush-meaning the user provides the power behind the motion, or you can invest in a powered brush. There are many powered brushes on the market at varying price points depending on your need and budget. The type you choose should be mostly based on which one you will actually use on a regular basis. Don’t spend big bucks on an electric toothbrush if you don’t think you will use it.

If you are considering an electric toothbrush, the ADA recommends looking for one that bears the ADA Seal of Acceptance which has proven the brush to be safe, tested for durability, and effective for use by the average adult or child for whom it is designed. Parents may find that electric toothbrushes are a great way to get kids to enjoy brushing teeth and end the frustration in trying to get them to brush.

The bristles of your toothbrush should always be soft. Although it seems like a more firm brush would remove more debris, the firmer brushes can actually do more harm than good to the gum tissue. The size and shape of the toothbrush head should fit comfortable in your mouth allowing you to reach all areas and all sides of teeth.

As always, we recommend brushing twice a day and flossing between teeth once a day. Most patients benefit best from brushing first thing in the morning and just before bedtime, but you can ask Dr. Holleron for specific recommendations to best suit the specific needs for your optimal oral health.

After each use, be sure to rinse toothbrush thoroughly with tap water and store in an upright position, separated from other brushes to allow the brush to air dry until you use it again. Be sure to replace adult toothbrushes every three to four months because they will become less effective as the bristles become frayed and worn out. Kiddo’s toothbrushes may need to be replaced more often because they are sometimes a little harder on them than their parents.
